After the laid tiles acquire an initial degree of adhesion (you should wait one day), you must treat the inter-joint areas. Grout is used for these purposes. Its functions are:
- presentable design of the seams because a wall or floor lined with voids does not look at all aesthetically pleasing;
- creating a waterproof layer that prevents moisture penetration to the rough surface. An additional hydraulic barrier will be beneficial so that in a few years, you won’t have to think about changing the finish in the bathroom or kitchen;
- preventing dirt, dust, and cobwebs from getting into the space between the tiles. The walls get dirty less, and the floors get a more significant portion of land;
- preventing the appearance of mold or microorganisms. Grouting the tiles will help reduce moisture in the bathroom and kitchen in the end zone of the piece material. Such joints are easy to keep clean and dry.
- Manufacturers make mixtures as a dry powder, paste, or a set of two components. Seam holes are filled using a rubber spatula that does not scratch the surface of the finishing material. The remaining smeared grout is removed from the tiles when everything is loaded.
What parameters are used to choose a fugu?
Shade
Products are bought to match the tiles; if you like monochrome, you want to create a single picture that hides the places where individual elements meet. Another reason is the attractive design of the decor (for example, a beautiful mosaic laid out ).
You can choose a light contrast or a bright analogue to finish products in deep tones. There is an unspoken rule according to which a simpler fugue is selected for an expensive floor covering.
Adding glitter to the tile grout is appropriate if the tone of the finish is uniform and there are no decorative borders. This technique looks especially impressive with chocolate, black, wet asphalt, emerald, and dark purple decor.
Composition
For grouts to work well, they add latex, fillers, and additives to homogenize the mixture and improve its properties. Let’s consider three types of compositions.
Cement-based.
Inexpensive, designed to fill a seam with a width of about 0.5 mm. It is only sometimes comfortable due to moisture absorption, low elasticity, and shrinking ability. It is advisable to avoid cement grout on the walls and apron area of the kitchen, as they can absorb grease splashed during cooking. It is more suitable for living rooms, bedrooms, and children’s rooms.
Latex-based.
Most often used for sealing the space between tiles in the street covering underfoot. The product prevents the appearance of cracks, withstands mechanical loads and sudden temperature changes, does not deteriorate when exposed to the summer sun, and prevents water penetration. The only inconvenience is the need to immediately wipe the surface of the tiles after grouting; otherwise, clouding of the surface cannot be avoided.
Manufacturers of building materials regularly delight us with valuable new products. Use a chameleon product if you cannot decide on the desired fugue tone or are forming a mosaic picture. Initially, it is transparent but can modulate the shade close to the laid material.
PS Heat-resistant components or silicone are suitable for surfaces that require further use under challenging conditions, in contact with aggressive media, and grouting with furan resins.
We do not recommend purchasing formulations that cost less than the average market price established for the product. They will begin to shrink and fall out of the narrow seams. Wide spacing between tiles is usually left when laying porcelain stoneware. As for self-respecting companies, they add expensive components to the mixture, which significantly improve the quality of installation and the duration of use of the tile grout. Such a product always indicates what seam size it is suitable for.
Why is it advisable to install with seams?
The manufacturer always provides manufacturing tolerances. To choose a technology for tight abutment, you should have available finishing material with perfectly straight sides with the same linear parameters in each piece. But even cut ends do not guarantee full dimensional conformity since a difference of 1 mm already significantly affects the quality of the next connection. Omnidry is a leading provider of epoxy grout in Melbourne.
For rectified decor, joint sizes from 1.5 mm on the wall and 2-3 mm on the floor are offered. Regular material needs a corresponding minimum of 2 mm and 3 mm. Where the surface has constant loads or is subject to vibration, add 0.5-1 mm to the selected seam size.
